Description

Full name: Let There Be Light! - Antelope Canyon

An example of God's beauty which He created specifically for us.

PROTECT: Antelope Canyon is one of a number of slot canyons in northern Arizona. It is probably the most famous. This is a good example of something that should be preserved for future generations, that they might enjoy the natural beauty. This canyon is protected because it is on Navajo land, and they control access to guided tours only, largely because several people died while in the canyon due to a flash flood. I learned from the tour guide that you have to have experience to know where to look for rain clouds ten miles away to know if there is a danger.

The reason why this is a good example of that which needs to be protected is because a nearby canyon of comparable beauty, though larger and more open, is Glen Canyon, which was flooded when Lake Powell was artificially created. The destruction of this beauty was the topic of a book put out by the Sierra Club called The Place No One Knew. The photographs are beautiful. But that beauty is no longer available except through photographs.

We can argue about whether Lake Powell should have been created, and also about whether the dam should be removed so that things can return to the way they were (though they won't do that). However, Lake Powell also presents a different kind of beauty, and it is one way to supply power that does not require the destruction of nonrenewable resources, nor does it create pollution. It's a tossup in my mind.

My mom was one of the activists that was adamently against Lake Powell. She was even a member of the Sierra Club. I've been waterskiing on Lake Powell. It was fun. I'm certain that to remove the lake now would certainly be different as there are now years of silt depositis and water stains. I don't know if you have evern been to the Great Salt Lake. You can still see where the lake surface yoused to be when it was Lake Bonneville.
