Chilopsis linearis

We had these blooming alongside a major street, and it was windy for weeks, so I didn't get a chance to try to photograph the flowers up close. But I got a second chance, when the summer rains caused them to bloom again.

I doubt if the flowers are this highly colored without breeding.

The blossoms and seed pods are both edible. They can be dried and made into tea. The plant may be used externally only as a poultice or fomentation over any swellings from injury, to soothe and reduce swelling, and is excellent on
puncture wounds and infections to draw out the poison. Dry and grind the leaves to powder; reconstitute a cupful with just enough hot water to moisten. Apply it to the wound and leave on about half a day. The powder might also be mixed with anhydrous lanolin to make a poultice for the same purpose. Make a flower decoction for cough, and as a stimulant in heart disease. The wood is used for house frames, fence posts, granaries, bows, stands for ollas, and as sticks to reach the nuts for eating. The branches are used to make baskets. The bark is fibrous and is used to make nets and clothing. The tree serves as shelter for campers.
