Description

Geranium fremontii.

Also known as filaree. It gets its name from the fact that the seed structure looks like a long bird's bill.

This is a medicinal plant, widely known. It is used as follows: the leaf tea is a gargle for mouth inflammations, sore throat, and tonsillitis. A decoction of a teaspoon of the root in a cup of water is used for stomach ulcers, as an enema for bleeding piles, hemorrhoids, and inflamed diverticuli, and as a douche for vaginitis. The fresh root is sliced and applied for gum or tooth infections. Hemostatic. The root powder is applied to small skin injuries as first aid.

I found this specimen on the hillside at Lake Pleasant, Arizona.
