Artist's Comments
The rounded cactus with yellow thorns, along the ground, are golden barrels, Echinocactus grusonii. This is a Mexican species. The fruit of barrel cacti are edible. I have eaten that of another species. They are a little firmer than a green pepper, and the green ones taste like limes, while the yellow ones taste like lemons. The seeds are also edible, and nicely crunchy. Whenever I am out and see one in fruit, I help myself to one. Delicious!
